Project Background​

Indonesia is the largest archipelagic country in the world. There are more than 17,000 islands, of which 9,000 have not been named and 6,000 are uninhabited. Due to its unique characteristics, Indonesia has vast renewable energy potentials, such as solar PV, wind, geothermal, etc. 

While there is huge renewable energy potential, the utilization of that potential is still minimal. Thus, the is a minimal role of renewable energy to improve the quality of life of the community, particularly in rural areas.

One of the rural areas in Indonesia is Garut, a regency in West Java Province, Indonesia. Located not so far from Bandung and traversed by the southern line of Java Island, Garut Regency consists of 42 districts, 21 sub-districts, and more than 400 villages. Garut Regency is famous, particularly for its nature and natural hot springs. However, there is still a need for the development of the area, including the local community.

Therefore, ITB SEED Center, in collaboration with the Technical University of Munich (Germany), has been developing a living lab at SMPIT Wasilah Intelegensia since 2021. SMPIT Wasilah Intelegensia is one of the high schools located in the area. It has 3 natural water sources, 7 fishponds, and some agricultural areas. By utilizing the solar PV and battery systems, ITB SEED Center tries to utilize the local potential and develop the high school to improve the quality of life of the school residents and nearby residents.
